22 BODE is involved in the ‘patient room of the future’ Prevent infections using room planning result of the studies conducted as part of the project is that antibacterial surfaces are no longer used in the new type of patient room. This is because the microorganisms that are beneficial are also killed. Instead, materials that are easy to clean are used. Two-bed rooms will in future provide each patient with their own bathroom (wet room). To be able to combine high hygiene standards and sensible nursing procedures, the design of the new patient room takes into account details such as lighting and the position of the disinfectant dispensers. The project, KARMIN (Hospital, Architecture, Microbiome and Infection), was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). BODE Chemie is involved as a member of the InfectControl 2020 consortium as an industrial partner. Other project partners include the Technical University of Braunschweig in association with the Charité Berlin, the Septomics Research Group from the University of Jena and Röhl GmbH. Hygiene down to the last detail Questions being considered by those involved in the last few years include: what bacteria live on the surfaces in patient rooms? Can infections in hospitals be prevented by different materials? The surprising How infections can be prevented in patient rooms using room planning and redesigning hygiene-relevant objects was the subject of a German research project in which BODE is involved. As part of the project, an infection prevention patient room was also developed. The prototype of this ‘patient room of the future’ will be presented to the specialist audience in October at the World Health Summit in Berlin.
