Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium. It is a member of the Burkholderiaceae family.
In humans, Burkholderia pseudomallei causes melioidosis with subcutaneous and subserous abscesses and granulomas.
Transmission occurs via direct contact with contaminated water or soil; the pathogen enters the organism through small skin lesions, by inhalation or swallowing. Human-to-human transmission is possible via body fluids.
