Rod-shaped bacteria (bacilli)

Aeromonas spp.
(bacterium)

Curved, straight or bean-shaped: bacilli come in many variants and are widely spread.

Aeromonas spp. are Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that belong to the family of Aeromonadaceae. The Aeromonas genus currently comprises around 20 species. Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria (previous name: Aeromonas sobria), Aeromonas caviae and Aeromonas hydrophila are of clinical relevance.

Aeromonas spp. may trigger diarrhoea, infections of skin, soft tissue and surgical sites, and in rare cases also bacteraemia and bloodstream infection.

Transmission mainly occurs via contaminated water and food.
