World Hand Hygiene Day on May 5 2021: CLEAN HANDS AT THE POINT OF USE – SECONDS SAVE LIVES

Year by year, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates the World Hand Hygiene Day on May 5. The campaign SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands aims to raise global awareness of the importance of clean hands for saving lives.

Hand hygiene consists of the components hand washing, hand disinfection and skin care. Of course, hand hygiene is particularly important in the professional environment (5 moments of hand disinfection), but it also plays an increasing role in certain situations in the private setting. By touching your loved ones, you want to offer comfort, care or affection. Keeping your hands clean is your responsibility. Protect yourself and others by cleaning your hands – for those who depend on your responsibility, for those who you care for at home. For your loved ones, for yourself and as appreciation for everyone else. The seconds of practicing hand hygiene are immensely important.

Hand washing vs. hand disinfection

In the private setting, hand washing  is sufficient in most situations, for example after using the private toilet. The main aim is to clean your hands from visible dirt and contaminations. In contrast, the aim of hand disinfection is to inacitivate potentially infectious pathogens. There are situations in which hand disinfection is indicated or may become necessary instead of hand washing. This may be needed, for example, when there is a risk of being in contact with pathogens and no clean water to wash hands is available (e.g. when travelling or on the go, at the supermarket, on public transportation).

Take a look and see what makes most sense in common everyday situations:

How is correct hand hygiene practiced? In order to visualize the process and highlight important aspects, we created infographics – originally developed for schools but just as helpful in the private setting!
