Most common cause (80 - 90 %) of post-transfusion hepatitis; may also be transmitted via sexual contact. Incidence/relevance: HCV is found in 5.5 % of healthcare personnel. After alcoholism, HCV is the most frequent cause of cirrhosis and cancer of the liver. After skin injury, up to 10 % of the people concerned test positive for HCV. Its relevance to healthcare staff is mainly due to the fact that in contrast to HBV up to now there is no vaccine available.
Note: Since 2004, a disinfection procedures activity against HCV is approved when it is virucidal against enveloped viruses.
