Cryptosporidium parvum
(parasite)

Cryptosporidium parvum is a protozoal (single-celled), obligate intracellular parasite belonging to the family of Cryptosporidiidae.

The parasite, which primarily colonises the small intestine of different mammals and humans, may cause cryptosporidiosis. This diarrhoeal disease may be life threatening in patients with weak immune system.

The main transmission path is direct or indirect contact with contaminated persons or objects.

For a successful inactivation of parasites, specific disinfectants effective against parasites are required.
