Cryptococcus neoformans
(fungus)

Most yeasts that proliferate by budding or division have a tubular form.

Belonging to the subphylum Agaricomycotina, Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast of the Filobasidiaceae family.

An infection by this fungus primarily results in cryptococcosis, a fungal disease of the inner organs, often occurring in immunocompromised people. Hence, it is one of the diseases most often affecting patients with AIDS.

Transmission mainly occurs via droplets or particles in the air.
