Rod-shaped bacteria (bacilli)

Citrobacter spp.
(bacterium)

Curved, straight or bean-shaped: bacilli come in many variants and are widely spread.

Citrobacter spp. is a genus of Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, straight bacilli belonging to the family of Enterobacteriaceae.

The bacteria are of increasing importance in nosocomial infections. The symptoms include urinary tract infection, bloodstream infection and surgical site infection. In addition, some species such as C. amalonaticus, C. freundii, C. koseri and C. diversus have a high degree of natural resistance to many antibiotic classes.

The main transmission path is direct or indirect contact with contaminated persons or objects.
