Rod-shaped bacteria (bacilli)

Burkholderia pseudomallei
(bacterium)

Curved, straight or bean-shaped: bacilli come in many variants and are widely spread.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium. It is a member of the Burkholderiaceae family.

In humans, Burkholderia pseudomallei causes melioidosis with subcutaneous and subserous abscesses and granulomas.

Transmission occurs via direct contact with contaminated water or soil; the pathogen enters the organism through small skin lesions, by inhalation or swallowing. Human-to-human transmission is possible via body fluids.
