Rod-shaped bacteria (bacilli)

Actinomycetes
(bacterium)

Curved, straight or bean-shaped: bacilli come in many variants and are widely spread.

Actinomycetes are Gram-positive, anaerobic rod-shaped bacteria belonging to the Actinomycetaceae family.

Human pathogens in this species are, for example, Actinomyces israeliiActinomyces naeslundiiActinomyces viscosusActinomyces odontolyticusActinomyces pyogenes that may trigger actinomycosis (ray fungus disease).

Transmission seems to occur primarily endogenous via mucosa lesions because Actinomycetes are part of the human mucosa.
