Quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC)

Chemical group belonging to the surfactants, which possess both a cleaning and disinfecting effect. QAC’s spectrum of activity is limited to vegetative bacteria and enveloped, lipophilic viruses (incl. HIV).

QAC has many advantages, for example, low human toxicity, skin and material tolerability, no odour. Combined with other disinfecting agents, QAC’s positive application properties and the other substance’s superior spectrum of activity have a synergistic effect.

Together with alcohol and aldehydes, QACs may, for example, increase or prolong the efficacy. Formulations with QACs are, for instance, used for instrument and surface disinfection.
