Enteroviruses

Heterogeneous group of viruses belonging to the family of Picornaviridae preferentially inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract.

Enteroviruses are mainly transmitted via the faecal-oral route; in human-to-human transmission the hands are considered the most important source of contamination.

Typical diseases triggered by enteroviruses include gastroenteritis and summer flu. In addition, persons with weakened immune system, pregnant women or children may develop a more severe course with meningitis, myocarditis and pneumonia.
